Earnings for engineers vary significantly by specialty, industry, and education.

Even so, as a group, engineers earn some of the highest average starting salaries among those holding bachelor's degrees.

Starting Salary
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual earnings of environmental engineers are about $69,940. According to a 2007 survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, bachelor's degree candidates in environmental engineering received starting offers averaging $47,960 a year.
