happen." |
"As Honda's senior manager
of environmental, health, and safety programs, I'm responsible for all
corporate and plant environmental and safety issues at the four Honda
plants in Ohio and manage a staff of 50 engineers. Some of our
responsibilities include: developing environmental permit applications and
reports, supporting production departments in achieving waste reduction
goals, implementing countermeasures to plant safety concerns, recommending
ergonomic improvements in new car designs, and developing a new
computerized environmental and safety management system. In my job,
communication is very important; I communicate with executive management,
production associates, the Environmental Protection Agency, the
Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and the public. Before
joining Honda, I worked in the chemical industry. I developed an interest
in environmental issues and asked my manager for more projects in this
area. I helped start a new environmental technology research group. When a
need developed for someone to handle environmental affairs, I was selected
because I'd shown interest and had worked with these issues.
To prepare for this field, I recommend that you develop strong technical
skill sets, as well as oral and written communication skills. The people
relations side is important, too. Network. Become active in professional
societies. Be proactive in your career management. Don't sit back and wait
for something to happen."
