Employment and Earnings
Recreational therapists
hold about 23,300 jobs in the United States, working in nursing and
residential care facilities and hospitals, state and local government
agencies, and in community care facilities for the elderly, including
assisted-living facilities. Others work in residential mental retardation,
mental health, and substance abuse facilities; individual and family
services; Federal Government agencies; educational services; and outpatient
care centers. Only a small number of therapists are self-employed, generally
contracting with long-term care facilities or community agencies to develop
and oversee programs.
Median annual earnings of recreational therapists are about
$38,370. The middle 50 percent earned between $29,660 and $49,140. The
lowest 10 percent earned less than $23,150, and the highest 10 percent
earned more than $60,280. Median annual wages in the industries employing
